Zegama-Aizkorri becomes the first race to achieve the Green Trail Concept audited sustainability certification
Zegama-Aizkorri Mendi Maratoia has been awarded Silver Certification by Green Trail Concept after achieving an overall score of 83% in an environmental, social, and economic sustainability audit developed by the Kilian Jornet Foundation and Ecoserveis.
Zegama-Aizkorri has achieved a new milestone in mountain running by becoming the first trail running event in the world to earn the Green Trail Concept (GTC) certification, developed by the Kilian Jornet Foundation and Ecoserveis. Following a comprehensive evaluation of 64 sustainability indicators across environmental, social, and economic areas, the Basque race obtained Silver Certification with an overall score of 83%.
"We are located in a natural park with significant environmental pressure that grows more complex every day. The only way to know if we are on the right track is to have an external audit tell us what we are doing well and what we can improve. That is why we decided to join the Green Trail Concept certification process," explained members of the Zegama-Aizkorri organizing committee.
Breakdown by pillars:
-
Environmental Pillar (88% – Gold level): High scores were awarded for flora and fauna protection, resource management, and carbon footprint measurement. Key practices include shuttle services promoting public transport, a ban on single-use plastics, a dedicated environmental volunteer team, and post-race cleanup protocols.
-
Social Pillar (80%): Highlights include accessibility measures, the Purple Point protocol against harassment, sign language interpreters, the Junior race, and active partnerships with local inclusion organizations such as Atzegi and Fundación Goyeneche.
- Economic Pillar (78%): Acknowledges the event's strong commitment to local purchasing, working with sustainable suppliers and local businesses in the region.
Valid for two years, this certification provides Zegama-Aizkorri with a framework to continue measuring, improving, and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mountain sports.
